Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start gardening?

    • Seasonal rentals begin around mid-april (contingent on weather and frost) for 2022. Year-long rentals manage their rental from January 1st-December 31st.
    • The 2022 last frost date is predicted to be April 25th.  It is recommended that all summer crops wait to be planted until after the first week of May to avoid any unexpected frost mortalities.

How do I pay for a plot?

    • There are three main ways to pay/rent-
      • 1) Online using Credit Card
      • 2) Mail a check to the office with a completed registration form and signed agreement
      • 3) Set up an appointment to pay in cash/check at the office

Can I look at the plots before I decide?

    • Absolutely! Potential renters can set up an appointment with the Garden Manager/Naturalist (abrunelle@co.monroe.in.us or 812-349-2805) for a tour of the gardens.

Do you allow trellising?

    • Yes, however, all garden accessories must remain within rented plot boundaries. If the renter is in a raised bed, they cannot nail, staple, attach garden accessories to the sides of the bed

Can I bring my own fertilizer?

    • Yes as long as if it follows our organic gardening guidelines. When purchasing an organic fertilizer, make sure it is “OMRI” certified.

Do you have pests at the garden?

    • All open, outdoor spaces are potential habitats for pests. The garden has a pest ID guide on-site and questions can be sent to me for pest assistance and advice. Our gardens rarely have deer issues due to the tall fence.

Do you till?

    • We are moving towards a no-till method, however, we are currently tilling ground plots. If you rent early you can email the garden manager and request to be on a “NO-TILL” list.

Can I bring my children?

    • Children are welcome to accompany their adult guardian but are not allowed in the area unsupervised.
