Why is my Tax Bill so high?

The total residential tax liability in Indiana is expected to rise 15%, according to a new analysis by Policy Analytics LLC for the Association of Indiana Counties. The Association of Indiana Counties reports that Indiana households will pay on average an extra $228 towards property taxes this year compared to last.

There are multiple factors that affect property taxes, and many of these can change from year to year. These factors include (but are not limited to) assessed value, deductions, tax rates, and other assessments, which include stormwater fees and liens filed against the property. Details regarding these factors are shown on the TS-1A statement that was mailed with the property tax bill. This statement has the words "SPECIAL MESSAGE TO PROPERTY OWNER" at the top and also shows differences between the current and previous year.
