Septic System Installers

Septic System Installers

The Monroe County Health Department certifies and registers septic installers interested in installing on-site wastewater systems in Monroe County. A registered installer for Monroe County should be knowledgeable of all current septic systems allowed along with the County and State regulations governing septic installations.

All septic permit applications are required to have a completed site plan. On Site Sewage Disposal System Design packets can be located here:

The steps to become a Monroe County Registered Installer are: 

  1. Pass (by 70%) a standard departmental exam which covers varying types of septic systems, along with County and State regulations concerning septic systems. 

  2. Be certified in the type of septic system to be installed on site.*

  3. Maintain a minimum of $600,000 Liability Insurance. 

  4. Pay registration fee. See list of septic related fees HERE.

    Homeowners who are knowledgeable and wish to install a septic system on their own property must:

    1. Pass (by 70%) a standard departmental exam which covers varying types of septic systems, along with County and State regulations concerning septic systems.

    2. Be certified in the type of septic system to be installed on site.*

    *Certification information can be found at the appropriate manufacturer website. 

    Wastewater staff offer their combined experience of soil and septic systems preferred while following the law regulating the installation on any site.

Office hours for staff are normally 8am-9am Monday through Friday for walk-ins. We urge you to make an appointment prior to walking in as staff may be out of the office doing field work.
