Overdose Prevention & Naloxone
What is Narcan?
Narcan is the name brand of naloxone hydrochloride. It is a potentially life saving medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
What are Fentanyl/Xylazine Testing Strips?
The CDC states that "Fentanyl test strips (FTS) are a low-cost harm reduction tool that can be used to prevent overdoses in combination with other strategies. FTS are small strips of paper that can detect the presence of fentanyl in different kinds of drugs (cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, etc.) and drug forms (pills, powder, and injectables).
FTS provide people who use drugs and communities with important information about fentanyl in the illegal drug supply so they can take steps to reduce risk of overdose."
Xylazine testing strips do the same, but with the drug Xylazine, a non-opioid sedative.

How do I use Narcan/naloxone to respond to an opiate overdose?
Nasal Narcan:
Could you or someone you know be at risk of overdosing from an opiate? Aaron's Law (Senate Enrolled Act 406-2015) allows the general public to administer naloxone, a drug used to reverse opioid overdoses, to an individual at risk of opioid related overdose. The State Health Commissioner issued a standing order for registered individuals or agencies to distribute naloxone to anyone who would like to carry it. Linked below are two printable .pdf briefs regarding your protections and rights to carry and administer naloxone in Indiana.
