Radon Exposure

When people breathe in air containing radon, it can cause lung cancer. Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the USA. The risk is even higher for people who smoke. The US Surgeon General recommends that all homes should be tested for radon.

While certain factors may raise or lower the risk of high radon levels, radon levels can fluctuate significantly. The only way to be sure that your home has radon levels below the EPA's action level of 4 pCi/L is to have it tested.

Radon Mitigation

If your home has radon levels higher than the action level, you should consider having a radon mitigation system installed. Most common radon mitigation systems can be installed for $1000 to $1500 and are highly efficient. While simple, this work requires technical knowledge and special skills.

Radon mitigators doing work in Indiana must be licensed with the Indiana Department of Health. Even homes that have already been tested in the past or that have mitigation systems in place should be tested to ensure that the radon levels have not changed and that the mitigation system in functional.
